Couples Counselling
The relationship can become the problem instead of either partner.

What is it?
Couples counselling is a structured form of therapy focused on the relationship between partners. It may address communication, conflict, trust, intimacy, life transitions, parenting, betrayal, separation decisions, or recurring emotional disconnection. The relationship - rather than one partner - is usually the primary client.
Common signs may include:
Repeating the same conflict without resolution
Emotional distance, loneliness, or loss of affection
Criticism, defensiveness, contempt, or shutdown
Trust injuries, secrecy, jealousy, or betrayal
Differences involving sex, money, parenting, family, or values
Uncertainty about staying, separating, or rebuilding
People can experience similar symptoms for different reasons. A thoughtful assessment helps clarify what is happening and what support fits.

What can contribute?
Relationship distress is often maintained by interaction patterns, unmet attachment needs, stress, individual histories, unequal labour, injuries that were never repaired, and differences in expectations or coping. Understanding a pattern does not excuse harmful behaviour.
A pattern that can reinforce itself
Trigger → protest, criticism, or withdrawal → partner feels threatened → defensiveness, pursuit, or shutdown → less safety and connection → trigger becomes more sensitive
How can it affect everyday life?
Emotional connection: Partners may feel alone, unseen, rejected, or unsafe in the relationship.
Practical life: Parenting, finances, household labour, and decisions can become battlegrounds.
Intimacy: Stress, resentment, health, trauma, and communication may affect affection and sexuality.
Family system: Ongoing conflict or distance can affect children and extended-family relationships.
These difficulties are not evidence of laziness, weakness, or a lack of effort. Patterns that make sense as protection can still become painful or limiting.
How we help at Rise & Shine Psychology
Treatment is individualized to your symptoms, history, circumstances, strengths, and goals. Your therapist may help you:
Identify and slow the negative interaction cycle
Communicate needs without attack or shutdown
Build listening, validation, and conflict-management skills
Repair injuries and rebuild trust when possible
Clarify boundaries, expectations, and shared values
Make thoughtful decisions about commitment or separation
The goal is not simply to suppress symptoms. It is to understand what is maintaining the difficulty, strengthen your capacity to respond differently, and help you build a life that feels more workable and meaningful.
Approaches we may use
Emotionally focused therapy and Gottman-informed interventions may strengthen connection, communication, and repair. Behavioural and systemic approaches can address agreements, problem-solving, and recurring patterns. Couples therapy is not appropriate as usual when coercive control or violence makes joint disclosure unsafe; individual safety assessment comes first.
Couples Counselling in Edmonton
You do not have to navigate this alone. Our therapists provide compassionate, evidence-informed counselling tailored to the person - not just a label or symptom list.
