Understanding Child Therapy

What is it?

Child therapy is counselling tailored to a child’s age, developmental stage, personality, and needs. Rather than expecting children to sit and talk in the same way adults do, therapy may use conversation, play, drawing, creative activities, skill-building, and parent or caregiver collaboration. The goal is to help your child better understand their feelings, build coping skills, and feel more confident navigating challenges at home, school, and with others. Evidence-based approaches for children are adapted to their developmental level and may involve parents or caregivers as an important part of the process.

Signs your child may benefit from support:

  • Frequent worries, fears, or difficulty separating from caregivers

  • Sadness, irritability, withdrawal, or low self-esteem

  • Big emotions, meltdowns, or difficulty calming down

  • Changes in sleep, appetite, energy, or routines

  • Behaviour changes at home, school, or with peers

  • School avoidance, learning stress, or trouble with attention

  • Difficulty with friendships, bullying, or social confidence

  • Grief, family changes, trauma, or a stressful transition

Every child has difficult days. Therapy may help when challenges are persistent, getting in the way of everyday life, or causing distress for your child or family.

Behaviour is communication

Children’s behaviour often communicates something before they can explain it in words. This does not mean that every behaviour has one simple cause. A child’s emotions and behaviour can be shaped by development, temperament, relationships, school demands, family changes, health, social experiences, and stress. Therapy creates space to understand the pattern with curiosity rather than blame.

A pattern that can reinforce itself

A difficult feeling → limited ability to name or manage it → behaviour, avoidance, or conflict → short-term relief or protection → the underlying need remains

How can it affect everyday life?

At home: Stress can show up as conflict, clinginess, defiance, withdrawal, or frequent emotional overwhelm.

At school: Anxiety, low confidence, attention difficulties, or social concerns can affect participation, learning, and attendance.

With friends: Children may struggle to join in, manage conflict, speak up, or recover from difficult interactions.

Within themselves: When big feelings feel confusing or unmanageable, children can begin to believe something is wrong with them.

Your child is not “bad,” “dramatic,” or failing. Their behaviour may be a sign that they need more support, skills, safety, or understanding.

How we help at Rise & Shine Psychology

Therapy is personalized to your child and your family. We begin by getting to know what is happening, what matters to your child, and what support will be most helpful. Your child’s therapist may help them:

  • Identify and express feelings in ways that feel manageable

  • Build coping, calming, and problem-solving skills

  • Develop confidence and emotional flexibility

  • Work through worries, sadness, loss, or difficult experiences

  • Strengthen communication and relationships

  • Practise skills for school, friendships, and daily life

Parent or caregiver involvement is often an important part of child therapy. Depending on your child’s age, needs, and goals, this may include check-ins, practical strategies for home, and collaborative conversations about progress. We also make space for children to build trust with their therapist and explain confidentiality in an age-appropriate way, including its limits around safety.

Approaches we may use

Your child’s therapist may draw from play-based, cognitive behavioural, emotion-focused, attachment-informed, trauma-informed, mindfulness-based, or family-based approaches. For children with anxiety, for example, clinical guidance supports psychoeducation, psychotherapy such as CBT, and family-based interventions when appropriate. The specific approach will be guided by your child’s needs, developmental stage, preferences, and your family’s goals.
